Training

English Setters are not difficult to train if you are an experienced dog owner, but they are not ideal for the novice owner unless you fully understand the breed and are prepared to take your dog to dog training classes.

It should always be remembered that the English Setter was bred as a working dog. It is ‘programmed’ to behave in a certain way, capable of independent thought and actions. The English Setter owner needs to understand this and needs to be trained in the ways of the dog rather than the other way around.

If you need help with training your English Setter, there are bound to be dog training classes in your area. There are also many excellent books available on the subject. One we can highly recommend is English Setters (Pet Owners Manual) by Karla D. Rugh.
